The Full Story

the book house

Martha's Book House in Arlington, Vermont, is a used bookstore that serves as the primary fundraising venue for the Martha Canfield Memorial Free Library.

Original Use: The building previously served as the library's home before it outgrew the space. In 1996, the library moved into its current facility, leaving the older quarters available for the book house.

  • Fundraising: It is the main source of book sale income for the library.

  • Naming: It is named after Martha Canfield, a prominent local figure and granddaughter of Arlington’s first rector. She left her extensive collection of books to the town, which formed the foundation of the community's library system in the early 19th century.
    • Inventory: The shop is known for a vast selection of donated books across all genres, managed largely by volunteers from the Martha Canfield Memorial Free Library.
